The first Illumination took place in September 1831. It was a celebration of the harvest and the changing of the seasons. The Children of Peace would invite the entire community to celebrate with them. The Temple was lit by candle, the band and choir would perform, and the next day everyone was welcomed for a feast.
Today, we still use real beeswax candles on the main floor, and we still include music as part of the event. Join us the first Friday in September as we enjoy an evening that brings us back through time in an incredible setting.
To kick off each season, we transform the Sharon Temple Museum into the ultimate event space for our Heritage Celebration. Live music, delicious refreshments, tours of the historic buildings, and wonderful company gives a chance for guests to view the museum in a different way. The funds raised from this event, go to support the museum in its ongoing efforts to maintain the buildings, as well as create dynamic and engaging programs.
